Why don't some stations work?

Post by wingnoit »

Hey everyone,

I'm just wondering if there's a general reason why some stations won't show stats at all. Is it because I'm using the wrong link? Or is it to do with the server's configuration? For example:

This station doesn't show anything in Radio Toolbox - https://listen.radioking.com/radio/379018/stream/429937
This station will show the track playing but not the number of listeners - http://streaming.radio.co/sfe04b06e5/listen
This station will show me the track and the number of listeners - https://sail.yachtrockmiami.com:8000/radio.mp3

Basically wanting to know if the fault is on me for not finding the correct link, or if it's the service itself.

Thanks!

Howdy,

My guess is it depends on the actual server powering their stream..... Radio Toolbox plays nice with Steamcast (funny that), Shoutcast V2, I'm not sure about the older Shoutcast 1 (it use to). Then with Icecast..... There is two flavours..... The KH and the standard version.... Radio Toolbox doesn't like one of them.... I can't recall which.

I'm sure the boys will let you know more accurately than me. But that it my suggestion.

So the first one is obviously a modified Icecast KH. Radio Toolbox does try to support KH, but since it is open source it can be modified freely. So any provider can modify the stats page, or otherwise block access to the stats pages.
The second one doesn't identify what it is. So the reason tracks playing works is likely due to it sending ICY headers and presumably ICY metadata.
The third one works because its Shoutcast v2. That project is closed source and thus its stats pages are very well known and generally cannot be modified by stream host providers.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Sounds like it's down to the way streams make information available. Cheers!

Hi guys

I've needed to revisit this myself in recent times. I needed to get https streams working.
I didn't want to upset everything that exists, so I looked for a something I could "bolt on" and offer the https stream in "addition to". Rather than "swap" everything over.

This led me down a path that exposed the fact that BOTH branchs of Icecast (main & KH) when in Relay Mode do not send stats for each mount. If you feed them in standard "push mode" everything is peachy! But that isn't how it works here. This could be a reason too.... the server links were "relays".

Shoutcast V2 does send stats for every mount or Sid... and plays nice with Radiotoolbox too.
